Biography

Kate Perugini, born Catherine Elizabeth Macready Dickens (1839–1929), was an English painter and the daughter of the renowned Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. Born in London, she was the sixth of Charles Dickens's ten children. Her early exposure to the literary and artistic circles of Victorian England profoundly influenced her interests and pursuits.

Initially known by her maiden name, Kate Dickens, she married the Italian artist Charles Allston Collins in 1860. After Collins's death in 1873, she married the painter and sculptor Carlo Perugini in 1874. It was under the name Kate Perugini that she gained recognition for her work as an artist.

Kate Perugini exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other major art institutions, showcasing her talent for portraiture and genre painting. Her artistic style was influenced by the academic traditions of the time, and her portraits often featured family members, friends, and prominent figures of Victorian society.

While she achieved success as a painter, Kate Perugini is also notable for her connection to the literary world through her father, Charles Dickens. Her life provided a unique perspective on the Victorian era, and she became a link between the literary and artistic circles of the time.
