Biography
Evelyn De Morgan (née Pickering) (1855–1919) was a British painter associated with the late Victorian Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist movements. Born into a cultured and artistic family, Evelyn displayed a passion for art from an early age. She received formal training at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where she excelled and won numerous awards.

Evelyn married ceramicist and novelist William De Morgan in 1887, and the couple became a prominent fixture in London's artistic and intellectual circles. While her husband was renowned for his ceramics, Evelyn gained recognition for her striking paintings, which often combined elements of myth, spirituality, and social commentary.

Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the Italian Renaissance, De Morgan's work embraced vibrant colors, intricate details, and a meticulous attention to symbolism. Her art frequently explored themes of spirituality, feminism, and social justice, reflecting her deep engagement with the intellectual currents of her time.

One of De Morgan's notable series of paintings revolves around the theme of the Angel of Death, exploring the intersection of life, death, and the mystical. Her artistic vision often conveyed a sense of the ethereal, with allegorical subjects and a focus on the spiritual and mythical aspects of human existence.

While her work was well-received by some critics and patrons, the changing artistic landscape of the early 20th century led to a decline in the popularity of Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist styles. Despite this, Evelyn De Morgan's legacy has experienced a revival, and her contributions to Victorian and Edwardian art are now more widely recognized.

Today, De Morgan's paintings are appreciated for their beauty, spiritual depth, and the important role they played in challenging societal norms of her time. Her works can be found in major museums and private collections, contributing to the ongoing appreciation of the Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist movements in the history of art.
