Biography

David Roberts (1796–1864) was a Scottish painter, watercolorist, and lithographer known for his detailed and vivid depictions of architectural and landscape scenes, particularly those from the Middle East. Born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Roberts initially pursued a career as a house painter and decorator. However, his passion for art led him to become a professional artist, and he gained widespread recognition for his contributions to the field.

Roberts' artistic journey took him to various locations, but his most celebrated work emerged from his travels to the Holy Land and the Middle East. In 1838–1839, he embarked on an extensive journey through Egypt, the Holy Land, and the Levant, creating a visual record of the historic and architectural wonders he encountered. The fruits of this journey were presented in a series of meticulous lithographs that captured the intricate details of ancient monuments, landscapes, and cityscapes.

The visual richness and historical accuracy of Roberts' depictions were highly praised, contributing to the popularity of his works. His detailed and atmospheric renderings of famous sites such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the ancient temples along the Nile provided audiences in Europe with a captivating glimpse into the exotic and historic allure of the East.
