Biography
David Jagger (1891–1958) was an English portrait and genre painter known for his evocative and finely executed works. Born in Kilnhurst, Yorkshire, Jagger belonged to a family of artists; his father, Charles Jagger, was a notable sculptor. David Jagger received his formal art education at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he honed his skills and developed a keen interest in portraiture.

Jagger's early career was marked by success, and he gained recognition for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects with great sensitivity. He often painted portraits of the British aristocracy and prominent figures of his time. His portraits were characterized by a combination of technical precision and a keen awareness of the psychological nuances of his sitters.

During World War I, Jagger served in the British Army and produced a series of war-related works, including portraits of soldiers and scenes from the front lines. His experiences during the war had a lasting impact on his artistic vision and subject matter.

One of Jagger's notable works is the portrait of King George VI, painted in 1937. This portrait showcased his skill in capturing the dignity and character of his royal subject. Jagger's portraits are known for their meticulous attention to detail, the careful rendering of fabrics and textures, and the subtle play of light and shadow.

In addition to portraiture, Jagger also explored genre scenes, often depicting everyday life with a touch of nostalgia. His genre paintings reflected a deep appreciation for the human experience, and he had a particular affinity for capturing the charm of rural life.

David Jagger was a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and exhibited regularly at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy. His works are held in various public and private collections, and his contribution to portraiture in the early to mid-20th century is recognized for its technical excellence and thoughtful portrayal of the human spirit.
