Biography

Charles Henri Joseph Leickert (1816–1907) was a Belgian-Dutch painter renowned for his atmospheric landscape paintings, particularly his depictions of winter scenes, cityscapes, and rural vistas. Born in Brussels, Leickert began his artistic training at an early age and later studied under the prominent landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout in The Hague.

Leickert's early career saw him working as a scene painter in theaters, contributing to his ability to capture the play of light and atmosphere in his later landscape works. In the 1840s, he gained recognition for his paintings of winter landscapes, a genre in which he excelled. His winter scenes, often featuring frozen canals, snowy villages, and figures engaged in various winter activities, showcased his mastery of detail and his ability to convey a sense of tranquility amid the wintry conditions.
