Biography

Carl Moll (1861–1945) was an Austrian painter and co-founder of the Vienna Secession, a movement that sought to break away from traditional academic art and promote innovative and avant-garde styles. Born in Vienna, Moll played a significant role in the cultural and artistic developments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Austria.

Moll initially studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he became associated with other like-minded artists who were dissatisfied with the conservative academic traditions. In 1897, he, along with Gustav Klimt and others, founded the Vienna Secession, an association that aimed to provide a platform for progressive artists to exhibit their work and challenge established norms.

As an artist associated with the Vienna Secession, Moll's early works reflected the influence of Art Nouveau, Symbolism, and Jugendstil, which were prevalent movements of the time. However, over the years, his style evolved, and he incorporated elements of Impressionism into his paintings, emphasizing light, color, and atmospheric effects.

He served as the first president of the Vienna Secession and was a key contributor to the movement's journal, Ver Sacrum.
