Bessie Potter Vonnoh (1872–1955) was an American sculptor and painter known for her contributions to American Impressionism and her elegant figurative sculptures. Born on August 17, 1872, in St. Louis, Missouri, Vonnoh emerged as a significant figure in the American art scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Vonnoh began her artistic studies at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts before moving to New York City to attend the Art Students League. Under the guidance of renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, she honed her skills in sculpture. Later, she studied in Paris at the Académie Julian, where she was exposed to the influential artistic developments of the time.

Her early career was marked by success in sculpture, particularly her small-scale, intimate figures that captured the essence of everyday life. One of her most famous sculptures, "Young Mother" (also known as "Fountain of the Innocents"), exemplifies her ability to convey a sense of maternal tenderness and grace.

Vonnoh's move to Giverny, France, in the early 20th century brought her into contact with the Impressionist movement. There, she was influenced by the innovative techniques and color theories of the French Impressionists.
