Biography
Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann (1819–1881) was a Danish-German painter known for her contributions to the Golden Age of Danish Painting. Born in Poland, she spent most of her artistic career in Denmark and Germany, becoming one of the notable female artists of the 19th century.

Jerichau-Baumann received her early artistic training in Warsaw before moving to Germany and eventually settling in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1846, she married the Danish sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau, and the couple became an integral part of the artistic community in Copenhagen. Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann's works often reflected her diverse cultural background and her exposure to various artistic traditions.

Her artistic style was influenced by Neoclassicism and Romanticism, and she gained acclaim for her historical and genre paintings. One of her notable works is the painting "The Wounded Danish Soldier" (1855), which depicts a soldier wounded in the First Schleswig War. This painting not only showcased her technical skill but also conveyed a sense of national pride and empathy for the suffering caused by war.

Jerichau-Baumann achieved significant recognition for her portraits, including those of prominent figures in Danish society. Her ability to capture the personalities of her subjects and her attention to detail contributed to the success of her portraiture.
