Biography

Anna Virginie Caroline De Weert (May 27, 1867 – May 12, 1950) was a Belgian painter known for her Luminist landscapes, still lifes, and portraits.

De Weert was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1867. Her family was well-to-do and had a strong appreciation for art and nature. Her grandfather was the writer Karel Lodewijk Ledeganck and her uncles, Alphons and Felix Cogen, were successful painters.

De Weert began painting at an early age and showed a natural talent for the craft. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1885 to 1895. At the academy, she was influenced by the work of the Luminist painters, such as Emile Claus and Emile Verhaeren.

Luminism was a movement in Belgian art that emerged in the late 19th century. It was characterized by its use of bright colors, soft brushwork, and open-air composition. Luminist painters were particularly interested in capturing the effects of light and shadow on their subjects.

De Weert adopted the Luminist style and became a leading figure in the movement. Her paintings are characterized by their bright colors, loose brushwork, and sense of atmosphere. Her landscapes, in particular, capture the beauty of the Belgian countryside with its lush forests, sparkling rivers, and rolling hills.

In addition to landscapes, De Weert also painted still lifes and portraits. Her still lifes are often of flowers and fruits, and her portraits are of family and friends.

De Weert exhibited her work widely in Belgium and abroad. She was a member of the Société des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and the Cercle Artistique de Gand. She also participated in the Paris Salon in 1892 and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

De Weert is considered one of the leading Belgian Luminist painters. Her work is characterized by its bright colors, loose brushwork, and sensitive portrayal of her subjects. She is considered one of the leading Belgian painters of her generation.

De Weert's work is held in several collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges.
