Biography
Alexander Mark Rossi (1840–1916) was a British painter known for his contributions to the Victorian art scene. Born in London, Rossi established himself as a prominent figure in the artistic circles of his time, gaining recognition for his historical and genre paintings.

Rossi began his artistic education at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he honed his skills in painting and drawing. He later traveled to Paris, absorbing the influences of the French art scene. Upon returning to London, he became associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of artists committed to reviving the detailed and vibrant techniques of early Italian Renaissance art.

Throughout his career, Rossi demonstrated a proficiency in historical and literary subjects. His paintings often depicted scenes from literature, mythology, and medieval history, reflecting the Victorian fascination with narratives and storytelling. One of his notable works is "The Death of King Lear," showcasing his talent for dramatic and emotionally charged compositions.

In addition to historical subjects, Rossi also excelled in genre painting, capturing scenes of everyday life with a keen eye for detail and atmosphere. His genre paintings often portrayed sentimental or humorous moments, contributing to the Victorian taste for narrative-driven art.

Rossi's work was exhibited at the Royal Academy and other prestigious venues, earning him acclaim among his peers and patrons. He was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1888.

While his reputation may not have reached the same heights as some of his contemporaries, Alexander Mark Rossi's art remains a valuable representation of Victorian artistic sensibilities. His commitment to narrative-driven painting and his technical skill contributed to the rich tapestry of Victorian art during a period marked by diverse artistic movements and influences.
