Born on March 23, 1854, in Southport, Lancashire, England, Stokes became a prominent figure in the late 19th and early 20th-century British art scene.

Stokes initially studied at the Birmingham School of Art and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he honed his skills and developed a love for plein air painting. Plein air, or outdoor painting, became a hallmark of Stokes's work, as he sought to capture the changing effects of light and atmosphere in natural settings.

The artist's early career was marked by his association with the Newlyn School, a group of artists who settled in the Cornish village of Newlyn, known for their realist depictions of rural life. Stokes, however, eventually moved away from the fishing village and focused more on pastoral scenes and landscapes.

Stokes was a versatile artist who painted in both oils and watercolors. His works often featured idyllic scenes of English countryside, with a particular emphasis on the play of light and shadow.
