Thayer began his artistic education at the Brooklyn Art School and later studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was initially drawn to portraiture and gained recognition for his skill in capturing the personalities and nuances of his sitters. His early works displayed academic influences but also hinted at his evolving interest in capturing the effects of light and color.

One of Thayer's notable contributions to art was his role as a naturalist painter. He developed a fascination with the study of camouflage and protective coloration in the animal kingdom. His theories and observations, particularly in his influential book "Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom" (1909), had a significant impact on military tactics during World War I.
