Biography

Viktor Mikhaylovich Vasnetsov (1848–1926) was a prominent Russian painter and designer associated with the 19th-century Russian Revivalist movement. Born on May 15, 1848, in the village of Lopyal in Vyatka Province, Russia, Vasnetsov's artistic career unfolded against the backdrop of significant cultural and political changes in Russia.

Vasnetsov belonged to a generation of artists who sought to rediscover and celebrate Russia's cultural and historical roots. He initially studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, where he was exposed to academic traditions. However, his artistic interests soon gravitated towards the nationalistic themes that would define his career.

One of Vasnetsov's major contributions to Russian art was his involvement in the Russian Revivalist movement. This movement aimed to revive and celebrate traditional Russian artistic forms, drawing inspiration from folk tales, medieval legends, and religious iconography. Vasnetsov, along with other prominent artists like Ilya Repin and Mikhail Vrubel, played a key role in shaping this movement.
