Biography
Viggo Johansen (1851–1935) was a Danish painter associated with the Skagen Painters, a group of artists who gathered in the northernmost tip of Denmark, known as Skagen. Born in Copenhagen, Johansen initially studied law, but his passion for art led him to pursue a career as a painter.

In the 1870s, Johansen visited Skagen, a small fishing village that had become a popular destination for artists due to its unique quality of light and picturesque landscapes. He became a central figure in the Skagen artistic community, which included notable artists such as Peder Severin Krøyer and Anna Ancher.

Johansen's early works often depicted scenes of everyday life in Skagen, capturing the charm and simplicity of the fishing village. His paintings demonstrated a keen observation of the local people and their activities, showcasing a naturalistic and narrative quality.

While Johansen initially painted in a realistic style, he later embraced Impressionism, influenced by the shifting light and colors of Skagen. His palette became brighter and more vibrant, reflecting the influence of French Impressionist painting.

One of his well-known works is "Midsummer Eve Bonfire on Skagen's Beach" (1906), which captures the festive atmosphere of a traditional Danish Midsummer celebration. The painting showcases Johansen's ability to convey the joyous spirit of the local community and his adept use of color to evoke a sense of warmth and celebration.

Viggo Johansen's contributions to the Skagen Painters and Danish art in general have earned him recognition as a key figure in the cultural history of Denmark. His paintings are displayed in major museums and galleries, preserving his legacy as an artist who skillfully captured the essence of Skagen and its inhabitants during a pivotal period in Danish art.
