Biography

Victor Axel Westerholm (1860–1919) was a Finnish painter associated with the Golden Age of Finnish Art. Born on August 15, 1860, in Helsinki, Finland, Westerholm made significant contributions to the Finnish art scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Westerholm began his artistic studies at the Finnish Art Society Drawing School in Helsinki and later continued his education in Paris at the Académie Julian, a renowned art academy that attracted many international students. During his time in Paris, he was exposed to various artistic influences, including academic traditions and emerging trends in French painting.

Upon returning to Finland, Westerholm became associated with the Egron Lundgren and Helene Schjerfbeck circle, a group of artists who played a crucial role in shaping the Golden Age of Finnish Art. The movement was characterized by a shift towards realism, a departure from academic traditions, and a growing interest in depicting everyday life.

Westerholm's works often focused on Finnish landscapes, coastal scenes, and rural life. He was particularly drawn to the archipelago and its unique atmosphere, capturing the interplay of light, color, and nature in his paintings. His landscapes and coastal scenes demonstrated a keen observation of Finnish nature and a mastery of the plein air technique.

One of Westerholm's notable achievements was his involvement in the planning and execution of the Finnish Pavilion at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. He contributed to the pavilion's design, showcasing Finnish art and culture to an international audience.
