Biography
Stefan Bakałowicz (1889-1958) was a Polish painter known for his exquisite landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His work is characterized by its meticulous attention to detail, its vibrant colors, and its ability to capture the essence of the Polish countryside.

Born in Lwów, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine), Bakałowicz showed an early interest in art. He studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, where he was influenced by the work of Jan Stanisławski and Józef Chełmoński, two of Poland's most important realist painters.

After graduating, Bakałowicz traveled throughout Poland, painting the landscapes and people he encountered. He was particularly drawn to the Podhale region, a mountainous area in southern Poland known for its picturesque villages and traditional way of life.

Bakałowicz's paintings are often described as "lyrical," evoking a sense of peace and tranquility. He was a master of light and color, and his paintings are often bathed in a warm, golden glow. His work is also notable for its use of sfumato, a technique that creates a hazy, dreamlike effect.

In addition to his landscapes, Bakałowicz also painted still lifes and portraits. His still lifes are characterized by their simple compositions and their careful attention to detail. His portraits are often of peasants and other working-class people, and they capture their dignity and strength.

Bakałowicz was a prolific painter, and his work is held in major museums throughout Poland. He was a member of the Kraków Society of Fine Arts and the Polish Society of Plastic Arts.

Bakałowicz died in Zakopane, Poland, in 1958. He was 69 years old. His work continues to be admired for its beauty and its ability to capture the essence of the Polish countryside.
