Biography

Sergei Arsenievich Vinogradov (1869–1938) was a Russian painter associated with the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) movement and the Russian Impressionist school. Born on August 7, 1869, in Moscow, Vinogradov played a significant role in the transition of Russian art from academic traditions to more progressive and modern approaches.

Vinogradov received his formal art education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, studying under renowned Russian painters such as Vasily Perov and Illarion Pryanishnikov. Early in his career, he was influenced by the realistic style of the Peredvizhniki, a group of Russian realist artists who sought to break away from the conventions of academic painting and depict scenes from everyday life.

As the 19th century gave way to the 20th, Vinogradov's style evolved, and he embraced the influence of Impressionism. He became particularly interested in capturing the effects of light, color, and atmosphere in his paintings. This shift aligned him with the broader European Impressionist movement, marking a departure from the more traditional approaches of his earlier education.

Vinogradov's works often featured landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits painted with a vibrant and light-filled palette. His use of loose brushstrokes and an emphasis on the changing effects of light reflected the influence of French Impressionists like Claude Monet.

One of Vinogradov's notable achievements was his participation in the establishment of the Union of Russian Artists in 1903.
