Biography

Frits Thaulow was a Norwegian Impressionist painter known for his luminous landscapes, city scenes, and river views. Born on October 20, 1847, in Oslo (then Christiania), Norway, Thaulow played a crucial role in introducing the Impressionist style to Norwegian art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Thaulow began his artistic education in Denmark and later studied in Paris under the tutelage of the renowned French landscape painter Henri Harpignies. Influenced by the emerging Impressionist movement, Thaulow adapted a style characterized by loose brushwork, vibrant colors, and a keen observation of light and atmosphere.

One of Thaulow's signature subjects was water—rivers, canals, and coastal scenes. His paintings often depicted the play of light on water, capturing the reflections and ripples with a masterful touch. His fascination with the effects of light and his ability to convey the mood of a scene contributed to the enchanting quality of his works.

Thaulow's interest in urban scenes and industrial landscapes set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
