Biography

Diana Coomans (16 August 1861 – 18 June 1952) was a Belgian painter known for her romantic portrayals of the original inhabitants of Pompeii before the eruption of Vesuvius devastated life there. Born in Paris, France, in 1861, Coomans was the daughter of the painter Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans and Adelaide Lacroix. Her sister Heva Coomans and her brother Oscar-Jean Coomans were also painters.

Coomans' artistic talent was evident from a young age. She studied painting under her father and at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. She also traveled extensively throughout Italy, where she was deeply influenced by the art and culture of the Renaissance.

In the late 1880s, Coomans settled in New York City with her family. She continued to paint prolifically, producing a body of work that is characterized by its attention to detail, its use of vibrant colors, and its ability to capture the essence of everyday life in Pompeii.

Coomans' paintings of Pompeii are particularly noteworthy. She often depicted scenes of domestic life, such as women preparing meals, children playing, and families gathered around hearths.
