Biography

Charles Sprague Pearce (1851–1914) was an American painter known for his contributions to the academic and realist traditions of art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Pearce began his artistic training at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and later continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

In France, Pearce was exposed to academic and naturalist influences, and he became associated with the French academic art movement. His early works often depicted historical and biblical subjects, showcasing a proficiency in classical techniques and a dedication to realism.

One of Pearce's notable paintings, "The Decadence of Rome" (1888), exemplifies his interest in historical themes. The work, displayed at the Paris Salon, received critical acclaim and established Pearce as a prominent artist in academic circles.

While Pearce's early career was marked by historical and biblical subjects, he later turned his attention to portraiture and genre scenes.
